How to choose a coach or mentor who is right for you

At some point, many people feel stuck. Not necessarily because something is wrong, but because they sense that more is possible. More growth. More clarity. More peace of mind. More progress.

Maybe you have been facing the same challenge for months. Maybe you have big plans, but struggle to turn them into action. Or perhaps you are facing an important decision and feel the need for an objective sounding board.

In those moments, an external guide can be incredibly valuable. Not to tell you what to do, but to help you recognise patterns, ask the right questions, and become aware of what is difficult to see when you are caught up in everyday life.

Interestingly, the people who invest in coaching or mentoring are often not the ones who are struggling the most. More often, they are entrepreneurs, leaders, and ambitious professionals who are already doing well but understand that they can grow faster with an external perspective.

But how do you make the right choice in a market where the number of options seems endless?

Step 1: Make a conscious decision to invest in yourself

The most important step may be the very first one. The moment you decide that you are willing to invest in yourself.
Not because you have to. Not because someone tells you to. But because you understand that external guidance can provide new insights, accelerate your growth, and help you move forward more consistently. Without that decision, every step that follows remains optional.

Step 2: Determine what type of support you need

Start by asking yourself where you are looking for support right now.
Professional? Personal? Relational? Financial?

Then consider what type of guidance best fits that need. A coach helps you move towards a desired outcome. A mentor brings personal experience and shares insights from a similar journey. A therapist or psychologist works more deeply on emotional challenges, mental health, or underlying patterns.
None of these roles is better than the others. They simply serve different purposes.
The right choice depends on what you need at this moment in your life.

Step 3: Clarify your preferences

Before you start searching, answer a few practical questions:

• In-person or online?
• Is certification important to you, or does experience matter more?
• Do you prefer working with a male or female coach or mentor?
• Are you looking for a few individual sessions or a longer-term programme?
• Do you prefer working with an independent professional or someone within a larger organisation?
• What budget are you willing to invest?

The clearer you are about your preferences, the easier it will be to recognise the right fit when you find it.

Step 4: Start within your network

The most valuable recommendations rarely come from Google. They usually come from people who know you and know the coach or mentor. Ask friends, colleagues, entrepreneurs, or people in your network who have worked with a coach, mentor, therapist, or accountability coach.
If your network does not lead you to the right person, then it is time to enter the vast world of online search. Explore websites, read blogs, and browse social media profiles. Pay attention to whether the person’s style, energy, and philosophy resonate with what you are looking for.

Decide in advance how much time you are willing to spend searching, because it is easy to stay stuck in comparison mode forever.

Step 5: Schedule at least three discovery calls

If you are considering a longer-term programme, I almost always recommend speaking with at least three different professionals.
A website tells you a lot. A conversation tells you much more. Ask everything that matters to you: how the programme works, what results clients typically achieve, what support looks like between sessions, and what the investment will be. Read testimonials and reviews. Check whether someone in your network knows the person you are considering.
By the end of those conversations, you will usually have a strong sense of who is the best fit for you.

Step 6: Take the leap

The perfect coach does not exist. What does exist is a professional who is the right fit for your needs, goals, and personality at this point in time.
Every program teaches you something valuable. The greatest growth does not come from finding the perfect coach. It comes from deciding to move forward.

Why I believe so strongly in accountability coaching

Over the years, I have completed a wide range of training programmes and worked with different types of coaches and mentors.
What stood out to me time and time again is that people rarely struggle because they lack knowledge. Most already know what is important.

The real challenge is consistently following through when daily life starts competing for your attention.

That is exactly why I believe so strongly in accountability coaching. Not as a motivational session, but as a structured process where reflection, action, and follow-through come together to ensure that plans are actually implemented.
In my own approach, I combine accountability with deeper reflection, personal growth, and practical execution. Always with one goal in mind: sustainable progress.
No surface-level inspiration. No endless theory. Just meaningful movement towards what truly matters to you.

Final thoughts

Choosing the right coach or mentor is not purely a rational decision.
It is a combination of clarity, intuition, and courage. Clarity to understand what you are looking for. Intuition to recognise when something feels right. And courage to take the next step. Because once you find the right fit, something remarkable happens: progress stops being accidental and becomes a conscious choice that shows up week after week.
